“Motivational Symposium”

February 8, 2009

OK, so I teach high school and I had to attend our “motivational symposium.” At said symposium I saw the female dance squad dance sexy to sexy music. really…gross. Even though I prefer the lady-type, I hear these females talk way too much to find myself attracted, ALTHOUGH I can’t say I speak for the dirty minds of the other teachers…really..gross So there we all were: our very own American Beauty. We paraded the athletes around – especially our always-contenders wrestlers. Then we had the academic champs stand where they were – in the bleachers (far from the gym floor where the jocks were) – for two seconds, and then they were told to have a seat. You couldn’t even see where they were. Our graduation rates are pathetic; our remedy was to take time out of class to parade the athletes and insult the nerds.
We lie about our attendance rates. I call it “pretendance.” I can’t wait to vote for the homecoming queen…

Senators take aim on public education in stimulus bill

February 6, 2009

I can appreciate the claim that we need immediate results from this stimulus plan. While the family planning provision is much needed and should be pursued in the immediate future, I can understand the argument that we won’t see short or even near term results from an increase in education on contraceptives and the related decrease in births. Though long term, less babies means less people needing resources from an already strained system.

That being said, it seems extremely short sided for Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) to introduce a bill that would cut from the stimulus proposal $50 billion dollars proposed in federal grants for state education aid. Specifically, the amendment would cut one-half of the funds allocated for:

  • The State Stabilization Fund ($39 billion) – the flexible funds going through state funding formulas to local districts
  • Special education/IDEA ($6.8 billion)
  • Title I ($6.5 billion)
  • Head Start ($1 billion)
  • Teacher Quality grants ($50 million)

The NEA calculates Indiana’s loss in potential funds at around $780 million. Call Senators Lugar (202-224-4814) and Bayh (202-224-5623) and urge them to strike this amendment. While you’re on the phone, tell the congressional aide that the previous 8 years of Republican economic rule got us into this mess and it’s time for some fresh ideas.

Teaching on 1-27-09

January 27, 2009

Teaching on 1-27-09: I called in sick today to ice my knees.

Ignorance is bliss…

Wait, wait, don’t tell me…I’ve heard this before.

I heard it from the Dick that would have us believe that we occupied Iraq for Democracy and Defense.

From the “crazy foreigner” that would have us believe that the Holocaust never happened.

From the bad company that swallowed up the good ones because if they didn’t, someone else would.

From the teacher that taught us that Lincoln freed the slaves, and then forgot about the rest of the story – wrestling practice was more important, anyway; Ben lost a pound.

From the principal that has long given up on his flock, and does nothing but lower standards under the guise of raising them… meanwhile the wolf licks his lips.

Mmmmm customers.

From anti-choicers that choose to allow 3rd world ghettos in the richest (are we still?) nation in the world.

From a land of law and order that has allowed outlaw gangs to rule inner cities for decades; after all, someone’s got to nurture the stereotypes; they grow quicker if you play them music.

From the Fox that refuses to concede that left IS right, for fear that right will be left behind instead of our youth. Priorities, priorities.

From “believers” that know not the golden rule, nor how to love thy neighbor, nor how to judge not.

I’ve heard it all before. So have my students: A new army in the making. The next generation of I don’t give a fuck and fuck you. Of I can’t fucking do it and I’ll do whatever the fuck I want. I’d say they only know half of the story, but that would be an overstatement.

Ignorance is Bliss?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Ignorance is Hell.

Yeah, though I walk through the hallways of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

The bell rings at 3.
